10 minutes (plus 20 minutes chilling)3 servingsRegular family foods

Ingredients(6)

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 3 tablespoons whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Tiny pinch of salt

Instructions(7 steps)

  1. 1

Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop the flesh into a food processor or blender.

  2. 2

Add cocoa powder, maple syrup, milk, vanilla extract, and salt.

  3. 3

Blend for 60-90 seconds until completely smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides once halfway through.

  4. 4

Taste and adjust sweetness if needed — add 1 more teaspoon of maple syrup for a sweeter mousse.

  5. 5

Transfer to 3 small serving bowls or ramekins.

  6. 6

Chill in the refrigerator for at least 20 minutes to firm up slightly.

  7. 7

Serve cold. Top with a few fresh berries if desired.

Nutritional Highlights

  • -Avocado provides healthy monounsaturated fats
  • -Cocoa is rich in antioxidants and magnesium
  • -Much lower in sugar than traditional chocolate mousse
  • -Good source of fiber and potassium

Age Appropriateness

A healthier dessert for 2-3 year olds. The avocado gives it a creamy texture without dairy, and the cocoa flavor is a special treat.

Introduction Tip

Make this when your avocados are perfectly ripe — soft but not brown. Overripe avocados can give a slightly bitter taste.
